The authorities responsible for these controls always pay close attention to the safety of cosmetic products. Thus, the alarm raised by Avicenn, the French Association for the Supervision of Developments in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, has sparked controversy. It has effectively rejected ten well-known makeup brands. The reason is the presence of titanium dioxide, authorized only in sunscreen products, which in these ten makeup products is listed in the ingredients list, albeit hidden behind the colorant code.

Large amounts of unauthorized titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles were found in all ten products tested:
- The particles are very small (between about 25 and 50 nm), many completely below 100 nm.
- These dimensions are typical of nanoparticles and are not permitted for non-UV pigments in cosmetics, according to the regulation.
La documented complaint Avicenna recalls the dangers of carbon dioxide, which are now well known.
Already in 2020, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) classified titanium dioxide as a suspected inhalation carcinogen (Category 2) when present in respirable dust. For very specific reasons:
- Very fine particles can lodge deep in the lungs.
- Animal studies have shown chronic inflammation and lung tumors following prolonged exposure to high concentrations.
- The mechanism appears to be related more to persistent inflammatory stress than to direct chemical toxicity.
- There is a possible genotoxicity (i.e. potential for DNA damage) of the product.

But let's take a closer look at the 10 tricks rejected by Avicenn's Report.
