"Eat with your brain and not just with your mouth" (Plutarch)

It means combining sobriety and pleasure. Healthy foods and a few indulgences. Always, if possible, in good company.

importance of eating healthy health philosopher Plutarch 1

It's a small book written centuries ago by the philosopher Plutarch, but it's still very relevant today. The text, which reads like the opening lines of the website Non sprecare (Don't Waste), is titled " Tips for Maintaining Good Health" (Melangolo Editions) and is based on a basic idea: to eat well and healthily, you must first use your brain and then your mouth.

"He who has no perception of himself is blind and deaf inhabiting his own body," writes Plutarch, as a premise for that psychophysical well-being that in ancient times was considered a goal of various philosophical schools. Plutarch extends his gaze to some advice we should engrave in our minds today: moderation at the table, which does not exclude the pleasures of gluttony; limited meat consumption ; not eating when hungry and drinking water at room temperature ; combining the pleasure of conversation with the meal.

Finally, another point that seems to have been written today: Plutarch lashes out with his authority against the starred chefs of the time , calling them "creators of delicious and crafty sauces," capable of confusing appearances with substance. Much better, the philosopher warns, is simple, natural, and genuine cuisine . Cuisine: Don't waste.

  • Eat and Drink With your brain, it means never being or feeling alone at the table. Food is one of the pleasures most meant to be shared.
  • Eat and Drink Using your brain means choosing everything, but in the right doses. Without unnecessary exaggeration and waste.
  • Eat and Drink with the brain means not having obsessions with food. Neither considering it the only pleasure in life, nor allowing oneself to be dragged into the swamp of health obsessions that lead toorthorexia.
  • Eat and Drink With your brain, it means always remembering others. Especially those who can't afford the same lifestyle as you. And so, never waste food, but rather donate it.
