SOWING AND FLOWERING

Multiplication occurs by division of the tufts before flowering, in spring, or by sowing in March-April. Flowering is expected within two or three years and occurs in April and May. If sowing, the fresh seeds should be planted at a depth twice their size, and the seedbed should be kept in a cool, shaded place, at a constant temperature of around 25 degrees.

POT CULTIVATION

Potted strelitzias should be grown protected from the cold. Therefore, they should be exposed outdoors with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. In winter, they should be sheltered indoors. The soil should be fresh, fertile, well-drained, and enriched with expanded clay. During the first five years, strelitzias will need repotting to adjust the pot size to the plant's growth. After the fifth year, this will no longer be necessary.

PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES

Strelitzia is rarely attacked by parasites, but it is susceptible to root rot. Prevent it by avoiding waterlogging.
