How to wear Bermuda shorts elegantly

A comfortable garment, but one that can be wasteful if you get the style, combination, and fit wrong. When you can't wear it

in shorts

Bermuda shorts are a very comfortable piece of clothing, especially in summer when temperatures rise. But you risk wasting them if you don't wear them elegantly, which depends primarily on three factors: the style, the fit , and the combinations.

The specialised farming model

Avoid overly baggy models, cargo pants with obvious pockets or excessively sporty ones and focus decidedly on:

  • Length just above the knee.
  • Tailored or slightly tapered cut.
  • Quality fabrics such as textured cotton, linen or wool blends.
  • Neutral colors: beige, navy blue, gray, off-white, olive green.

The fit

Bermuda shorts should fit comfortably without being tight and shouldn't require a belt to stay up, although a belt can complete the look. The fabric shouldn't pull when walking or sitting, and at the same time, avoid very loose styles that create a "sack" effect and look less elegant. A good rule of thumb is to leave a little room between the thigh and the fabric, but not too much.
Finally, the bottom of the Bermuda shorts should reach just above the knee, or at most just above it. Very short Bermuda shorts tend to look more sporty.

The pairings

The combinations, in turn, depend on the type of Bermuda shorts.
  • Elegant summer look
  • Tailored bermuda shorts in beige or navy.
  • Well-ironed linen or cotton shirt.
  • Thin leather belt.
  • Moccasins or loafers without visible socks.

smart-casual

  • Navy blue Bermuda shorts.
  • Quality polo shirt in solid color.
  • Suede moccasins or sneakers minimalist leather.

With the jacket

  • Matching tailored Bermuda shorts.
  • Lightweight deconstructed blazer.
  • Shirt or polo shirt

Shoes

The most suitable shoes to match with Bermuda shorts are:
  • Moccasins.
  • Driving shoes.
  • Espadrilles quality.
  • Minimal white leather sneakers.

Errors to avoid

If you don't want to waste a pair of Bermuda shorts, there are some mistakes to avoid:
  • Sports socks in sight.
  • Bermuda shorts too long (below the knee).
  • T-shirt with bold prints if you are looking for elegance.
  • Technical sandals or flip-flops outside the beach and pool.
  • Excess of accessories.

When Bermuda shorts can't be worn

Bermuda shorts cannot be worn in a number of circumstances, such as these:

  • Weddings with an elegant or formal dress code.
  • Religious ceremonies (unless otherwise indicated or in very informal contexts).
  • Gala evenings.
  • Official receptions.
  • Law firms.
  • Banks and finance.
  • Management consulting.
  • Meetings with important clients.
  • Job interviews.
  • Commemorations and funerals
  • Official visits to institutional environments
  • Official hearings
And don't try to be funny by thinking you're breaking convention with Bermuda shorts: you'll only risk being ridiculous and making a bad impression.
