Ten women educators, including Laura Ulisse, Loredana Guidi, and Lauretta De Mattia, have performed a small miracle in Rome by creating a nursery school named “ Loris Malaguzzi ” on the site of an abandoned school in the Monte Cucco area, on the outskirts of Trullo.
A unique project, and not only in the capital, for its educational and organizational features. First of all, there are no rigid sections divided by age: the spaces are instead organized as different centers of interest , which children can explore freely. This fosters autonomy, collaboration between children of different ages, and co-learning. Space is considered an integral part of education: the architecture was designed to be transparent and communicative: large windows and glass walls allow children to see what's happening outside and in other spaces. The concept is based on Malaguzzi's idea of "space as a third educator . " Children can choose and move around independently: materials and activities are organized to be easily understandable and accessible, allowing them to work alone or in small groups.
A day typically includes:
- welcome;
- activities and laboratories in centers of interest and in the garden;
- moments of personal care;
- lunch;
- rest;
- snack;
- new activities/workshops and games;
- exit.
The Loris Malaguzzi nursery school is combined with the municipal nursery school “La Torta in Cielo di Gianni Rodari” , which is located in the same building, at Via Giovanni Porzio 30: the two facilities thus share an educational continuity project, with common activities, spaces, training and pedagogical objectives.
