One of the biggest sources of waste of public money in Italy is represented by the jungle of state-owned companies, controlled by municipal administrations with enormous debts and equally large losses. Three governments have appointed special commissioners to thin out the jungle, but none have succeeded in completing the mission. The reason is obvious: these state-owned companies, which squander citizens' money and divert it from other expenditures, such as nursery schools and services, are sources of clientele and contracts that no politician intends to give up. And the waste of state-owned companies continues endlessly.
