Schools to become pastor In Italy, there are now four, located in Sardinia, Sicily, Piedmont, and Tuscany. Each has an average of 50 students, aged 18 to 40.
The most significant development in the new appeal of sheep farming, in a country with seven million sheep, is the increase in schools where this profession is taught. Based on a project by the Council for Agricultural Research, together with the universities of Turin, Sassari, and Molise, the "National School of Sheep Farming" was established. In Calabria, the “Pastor 4.0” training course dedicated to the application of technology to sheep and goat farming.
The subjects covered include: milk marketing, genetics and reproduction, product quality, animal nutrition, marketing, and communication strategies. The course consists of 130 hours in total: 65 hours of theory and 55 hours of practice. Career opportunities include both self-employment in the pastoral sector and employment on a livestock farm.
