What are the most affordable supermarkets in Italy? Altroconsumo conducted its annual survey in March, examining 1.140 stores, including supermarkets, hypermarkets, and discount stores. The overall ranking for 2024 was as follows:

  • Lidl
  • Eurospin
  • Aldi
  • In's
  • MD
  • Penny Market
  • Todis
  • Esselunga superstore
  • Esselunga
  • Interspar

If discount stores are excluded from the analysis, the top ten ranking becomes the following:

  • Family Superstore
  • Conad
  • Pam

  • Coop
  • Eurospar
  • Esselunga
  • Ipercoop

Italians' food expenditure in 2023

In 2023, according to ISTAT calculations, Italian families spent €525,33 per month on food and alcoholic beverages alone. This equates to a yearly expenditure of €6.300: a figure that consumers can reduce by as much as €2.000-€2.500 by choosing cheaper supermarkets.
