Fibronit closed its doors back in 1985, after half a century of business: its production, in the heart of Bari, was tainted by asbestos. A true ecological disaster . But after the closure, the area needed to be demolished and reclaimed. Fibronit, which specialized in the production of asbestos building materials, killed 417 workers from mesothelioma and asbestosis between 1972 and 1995. Another 300 victims were among the residents of the "red zone," the three neighborhoods within one kilometer of the factory.

The tender for the removal and remediation of the former factory was put out to tender way back in 2013 by the regional administration led by Emiliano, but a series of interventions by the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) effectively blocked the awarding of the contract . Now we await the Council of State's decision, and the only voice we hear is that of the Association of Families of Asbestos Victims . How long will we have to wait for the remediation to begin?
