We still live surrounded by asbestos, with all the resulting health risks and waste. Estimates vary, from 32 to approximately 40 million tons of asbestos still to be disposed of, while 214.469 private buildings, 50.744 public buildings, and 20.296 industrial sites containing asbestos have been identified. Not to mention 2.500 schools. The Ministry of the Environment's mapping ( the last one dates back to 2024) is decidedly incomplete, partly due to the delays of many regions in completing their national censuses.
Instead, the National Asbestos Guard (GNA) is operating, a service promoted by the National Asbestos Observatory (ONA APS) , a socially beneficial association dedicated to the fight to eliminate asbestos. This provides all citizens with a free tool to report suspected asbestos-containing sites, with the aim of facilitating their mapping and monitoring and pushing for their remediation and disposal.
