Bistort: ​​the plant for treating inflammation

It's also effective for sore throats and preventing circulatory problems. The infusion is used for diarrhea and incontinence, and its culinary uses.

La Bistort (scientific name Bistorta officinalis), also known as serpentine o serpentarium, is a perennial plant with very marked medicinal properties, especially for inflammation, diarrhea, incontinence, and the prevention of circulatory disorders. The name Bistorta derives from the Latin:  , which means two, and bullfighter, or twisting: refers to the characteristics of the roots that form U-shaped spirals. In ancient times, the plant was also attributed magical functions, in particular to ward off the evil eye.

The plant

It belongs to the family of Polygonaceae, has an erect stem and leafy at the base, which can reach a height between 20 and 90 centimetres. The leaves are large, triangular lanceolate, with inflorescences in the shape of a single spike, pink or white in colour, up to 10 centimetres long, capable of attracting pollinating insects. The part of the plant used is the rhizome, and harvesting takes place from September to November.

Once harvested, the rhizomes are cut into pieces, or even whole, and left to dry in the sun for two to three days. Once dried, they should be stored (they can last up to two years) in cloth bags and in a dry place. 

Where it grows

Bistorta originates from Europe, and the plant grows wild in mountainous areas and moist soils, even up to 2.500 meters above sea level. However, it can also be grown in gardens for its decorative properties, thanks to the beauty and vibrant color of its spikes and flowers. In Italy, it is widespread in the northern regions.

Property

The main properties of Bistort are:

  • Astringent and antidiarrheal. For this reason the plant is indicated in case of Diarrheaof incontinence, and intestinal disorders in general. 
  • Anti-inflammatoryBistort is considered a natural anti-inflammatory, effective against sore throatespecially in case of irritation of the mucous membranes.
  • AntioxidantThis property is confirmed by some studies, thanks to the presence of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds that protect cells from oxidative stress.
  • HealingIt can be used for small wounds and abrasions.
  • VasoconstrictorIn this sense it helps prevent heart problems. 

How to use

Bistort is most commonly used in infusions and decoctions. The roots, however, due to their high concentration of active ingredients, can be used to prepare ointments and lotions.

Infusion for diarrhea and incontinence

The bistort infusion, to be used in cases of diarrhea or incontinence, is very easy to prepare.

  • Place 30 grams of finely ground rhizome in a liter of water at 50 degrees
  • Leave to macerate for half a day
  • Filter well
  • Drink 2-3 cups a day

Use in the kitchen

In the popular cuisine of Northern Italy, particularly in the mountainous regions, bistorta, starting with its leaves, is used as an ingredient in soups or as an aromatic herb in rustic dishes. 

Controindicazioni

Using excessive doses of Bistort can irritate the mucous membranes, or have an effect opposite to the desired one, leading for example to excessive astringency.
