How to wash wool sweaters by hand in the washing machine to recover felted garments

How many times have we despaired at the loss of a sweater at home : after washing it, we found it so shrunk it was no longer usable. But first question: did we check the care instructions on the label? And again: was it really necessary to wash it? And how did we do it, by hand or in the washing machine?

Wool sweaters and scarves should be washed only when absolutely necessary to ensure they do not get ruined.

Here are some simple tips for washing wool sweaters properly , trying to recover a felted item and effectively removing stains:

The right detergent

When purchasing detergent , choose those formulated with non-polluting biodegradable substances and, to prevent sweaters from felting, follow the doses indicated on the package without exceeding the quantities.

In the washing machine

Before machine washing, read the care label carefully to determine whether you can do so or should hand wash. Set the wool or delicate cycle to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius, or use a cold wash. One of the main causes of felting is temperature fluctuations: make sure it remains constant both during the wash and rinse cycles. To prevent felting, add half a seedless lemon; it also has a bleaching effect.

By hand

Fill a basin with hot water, add the detergent, and then immerse the items to be washed. Let them soak for 10 minutes, agitate slightly to remove any dirt, and then rinse. Wring out the items very gently. To quickly absorb the water, place them in a towel or, if indicated on the label, in the washing machine. In this case, choose a light, quick spin cycle.

Whether machine or hand washing, avoid fabric softener if possible: if it's not removed properly, you risk ruining your clothes. Replace it with a small amount of hair conditioner.

How to hang sweaters

Hang sweaters out to dry away from heat sources and direct sunlight, which could cause them to yellow, especially very light-colored sweaters.

How to iron sweaters

Place a cotton towel over the garment to avoid direct contact with the heat and prevent the iron from irreparably staining the sweater's fibers. Set your iron to the wool setting and always use steam.

How to remove stains

Use a solution of half water and half white vinegar, and two drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Rub the stains with a clean white cotton cloth, then wash according to the instructions.

How to Recover a Felted Sweater

Fill a basin with warm water and add a little baking soda . Submerge the garment, then rinse in another basin of warm water mixed with half a cup of glycerin. If the garment is particularly damaged, soak it for a whole day in a solution of water and ammonia: one teaspoon per liter of water.
