How to make your electric battery last longer

Tips for electric cars, motorcycles, and hybrid vehicles, ranging from charging to the temperatures to consider.

How to recycle batteries
In an electric car, like in a motorbike or a scooter, the battery is by far the most expensive component, and therefore it must be well cared for, following some useful tips, to avoid the unpleasant surprise of having to suddenly replace it. Typically, the cost of a battery ranges between 30 and 40 percent of the entire vehicle, be it a car, motorcycle, or scooter.

Avoid full charging

Avoid overcharging the battery by constantly charging it fully or below a certain minimum threshold. Both cases cause stress that ultimately affects battery life.
  • Lithium-ion batteries suffer from both when I'm always at 100%, both when they often fall below 10 percent.
  • The ideal for everyday use is to stay between the  20 and 80 percent.
  • Charge to 100% only when you really need it (e.g. long trips).

Slow recharges

Slow charging is more effective in terms of battery wear.

  • Fast charging stations (DC) are convenient, but they put a strain on the battery.
  • It is better to favor slow charging (AC) at home or in workplaces equipped for refueling.
  • Use fast charging only when necessary.

Beware of extreme temperatures

Extreme temperatures, whether too high or too low, can reduce the life of a battery.
  • Excessive heat is one of the main enemies of the battery.
  • Even intense cold temporarily reduces performance.
  • Park in the shade or in the garage.
  • Avoid leaving your car in the sun with a 100% charged battery.

What to do when the car is stationary for a long time

If you don't use your car for days or weeks:
  • Leave it with the battery charged around 50 percent
  • Avoid long periods of time where the battery is either discharged or fully charged.

Guarantee

When buying an electric car or motorcycle, make sure it comes with a good warranty: at least seven to eight years, and a total mileage of no less than 150 kilometers.

These tips also apply to electric motorcycles and scooters, although the battery life of two-wheeled vehicles is significantly shorter than that of a car.

And they also apply to hybrid cars, although in this case The car already takes care of most of the battery management, including charging, itself..
