In Foggia, with the project “Nonni Vigili” is created a voluntary civic service coordinated by the Local Police, designed primarily to increase child safety in front of schools and, at the same time, enhance the participation of older people in city life. Human resources are thus enhanced in two ways: children are kept safe, and adults are mobilized to continue being useful.
The project can take partcitizens residents of Foggia, pensioners, aged between 55 and 78, with the necessary psychophysical suitability, enjoyment of civil and political rights and the absence of criminal convictions or proceedings.
Before beginning their civic service, the Nonni Vigili undergo a short information and training course at the Local Police Headquarters. From then on, the volunteers patrol schools, especially during student entry and exit times , helping to make crossings and the area in front of the school safer. On certain occasions, they may also be deployed to patrol the area during civic, religious, cultural, or sporting events.
For the recruited volunteers there is a insurance coverage for accidents and civil liability and a flat-rate expense reimbursement, based on the number of days during which the civic service was carried out near the assigned school.
