From waste to methane, the solar-powered robot developed at a technical institute

The discovery at the "Luigi Trafelli" in Nettuno. Very young students have already become potential scientists.

Students at an institute in Nettuno have developed a system that transforms organic waste into methane.

Not just math, history, and geography, schools are now also teaching how to respect the environment, starting with the reuse of waste . This is happening in Nettuno, in the province of Rome, where two classes from the Luigi Trafelli Industrial Technical Institute have developed a series of solar-powered robots and a system that can convert garbage into methane.

METHANE FROM GARBAGE

The eco-inventions , developed to take part in the “Renewable Energy” competition organised by an entrepreneur from Nettuno, Francesco Nardini, in cooperation with the “Andrea Sacchi” Civic University, saw the students abandon their student responsibilities for once and try their hand at science for the benefit of environmental protection.

WASTE ENERGY PRODUCTION

Specifically, the young scientists have created a bioreactor powered by organic waste in an oxygen-free environment. Thanks to the action of bacteria, the decomposing waste ferments and releases methane gas, which can be used to produce energy.

By recovering some parts of old cell phones they managed to develop a series of robotic insects capable of moving thanks to special wings made of photovoltaic panels.

The boys even managed to develop a wind turbine and a type of solar panel that uses LEDs , light-emitting diodes, in reverse. Connected in series and exposed to sunlight, the diodes are capable of producing electricity.
