"Welcome immigrants with open arms" is Pope Francis 's invitation , but not everyone in Italy is willing to do so. Welcoming immigrants is often overshadowed by fear of foreigners, which unfortunately still affects many Italians. Fortunately, there are numerous cases of integration. Immigrants are welcomed by Italian families , breaking down the walls of racism and indifference . One solution that is gaining ground is co-housing, or cohabitation between Italians and immigrants . In several regions of Italy, citizens offer a room or an area of their home free of charge , hosting those arriving from far away and without a roof over their heads. An opportunity for those arriving but also for those hosting. Here is a sobering story that can serve as an example for many Italians.

CIAC ONLUS PARMA'S "WHO KNOCKS AT MY DOOR" PROJECT

We often see them on television. They arrive on overcrowded boats on our shores , and the journey doesn't always go as expected. Then, we come across them on the streets begging or sleeping inside train stations. Yet, it takes little to help them integrate into our society. The desire to meet those who come from far away. The willingness to cross paths with refugees and their communities . Offering a spare room can be the first step in showing yourself and your family that "foreigner" is not synonymous with "stranger."

This challenge was taken up by the Parma-based Ciac Onlus association , which launched the "Whoever Knocks at My Door" project , encouraging a family or community to welcome a refugee by personally getting involved. It's an opportunity for mutual understanding that can change one's life . Bringing a refugee into the family is a concrete gesture toward the many immigrants arriving in Italy.

They find themselves in situations where a family welcome can make a difference . They can be hosted by any community, family unit, or group of cohabitants who offer this experience. Simply offering your home space to welcome a refugee is sufficient. In this way, refugees can be offered not only a roof and a meal, but also a network of relationships to facilitate their integration. There are many cases of welcomes, indeed. There are many stories of solidarity and sharing between those who are already Italian and those who intend to become Italian.

IMMIGRANT INTEGRATION: THE STORIES OF IBRAHIM AND MURSAL

The project provides home-based accommodation for a period of six months and monthly reimbursement to families. Furthermore, immigrants are provided ongoing support by family psychology specialists and a dedicated project worker to guide them through the dynamics and practicalities of the reception process. Furthermore, should difficulties arise during the reception phase, refugees can continue to participate in training , discussion, and community socialization opportunities within the SPRAR project.

Young parents, established professionals, and retirees have opened the doors of their homes, offering the warmth of a family to those who had first felt the chill of separation from their homeland and then the chill of indifference. This is the case of Arianna, a 44-year-old researcher and mother of four, who welcomed Ibrahim , an immigrant who has now become an integral part of the family.

A similar opportunity arose for Mursal , a twenty-six-year-old Somali refugee, who was hosted by Giorgio, 81, a father of nine. The young man describes the experience as "something special" because it greatly helped him learn the language and interact with Italians. Furthermore, for him, happiness is " when I get home after work and find dinner and someone waiting for me ."
