National Day Against Food Waste: We unite with our everyday passion.

For National Day Against Food Waste, we decided to choose one of the initiatives that best exemplifies our vision of "Do Not Waste," the one we share with you every day on these virtual pages. It wasn't easy: there are so many stories we've shared with you over the years: soup kitchens that don't waste food , hospitals that donate it to the poorest , or simply bloggers who invent creative recipes with leftovers that we all try, managing to prepare tasty dishes even for just a few euros.

Cooperation online, fighting waste, and collecting food to donate to those most in need . We've chosen to remind you of the online initiative " Pasto Buono ," organized by the Qui Foundation. Founded in Genoa in 2007, the initiative now boasts 120 members. It recently launched in Rome , where it received the patronage of Rome Capital in December 2012, and is soon arriving in Florence , Milan , Naples , and Palermo.

The collection of ready-made meals and fresh foods in perfect condition, which are unsold and would otherwise be destroyed and discarded, is permitted by Law 155/2003 . This allows waste to be transformed into a food resource: the recovered foods can be donated to charities that distribute them to those most in need.

A NO-WASTE RECIPE: Leftover vegetables? A delicious risotto for dinner.

How does it work? Simple. Just go to the website and sign up to participate in the program. The network connects non-profit organizations that provide assistance in the area with participating businesses, from bars to restaurants , from retail stores to large supermarkets . Volunteers from the organizations can then go directly to collect the leftover food and distribute it , or they can receive electronic cards, which serve as shopping vouchers , to allow families in need to shop free of charge.
