The Cavalli Selvaggi in Liguria association (known above all as the “I Cavalli Selvaggi dell'Aveto” project and linked to ReWild Liguria ODV ) is an initiative that deals with the protection and valorization of a herd of feral horses that lives in the Genoese hinterland, in the Aveto Park.
The association does not manage horses like in a riding school: its objective is to let them live free and protect them , taking care of:
- monitoring of packs in the territory
- protection of the biodiversity of the Aveto Park
- study and research on horse behavior and the ecosystem
- mediation between the presence of horses and human activities (agriculture, roads, tourism)
The Aveto horses descend from domestic horses abandoned or left free years ago, and today they live in stable herds in complete freedom throughout the territory.
The activity is self-financed through donations but also through horse watching , an important part of the project. That is:
- guided excursions to observe horses in their natural environment
- trekking and environmental education activities
- promotion of a sustainable tourism in the valley.

Space is limited and often sells out on spring and summer weekends.
As for costs, adults pay 25-35 euros each, children get a discount, and for children, obviously accompanied by adults, the tour is free.
Cavalli Selvaggi owes its success to the energy and passion of two women: Evelina Isola and Paola Marinari. Evelina, a naturalist and science communicator, studies and protects feral horses and coordinates monitoring and research activities, as well as nature excursions. Paola, meanwhile, has been involved in equestrian tourism in Italy, Africa, and South America since 1992, and manages the association's logistics in Liguria.
