Used diapers must be disposed of properly because they are not recyclable like plastic or regular paper, and therefore represent potentially highly polluting waste.
To throw them away correctly you need to:
- Close them well: roll up the used diaper and close it with the adhesive tabs, this will prevent liquids or bad odors from leaking out.
- Put it in a separate bag (some use biodegradable bags specifically for diapers).
- In most Italian municipalities, diapers are thrown in the unsorted waste (grey or black bin), but never in plastic or paper.
These are the most common mistakes made when throwing away dirty diapers and which, instead, should be absolutely avoided:
- Never throw diapers in public places, such as parks or gardens, which are not designated for garbage collection. They should always be disposed of in the general waste or organic waste bin, depending on the specific circumstances.
- Never leave the door open bag of the used diaper, before throwing it in the garbage, otherwise unpleasant odors come out and correct waste management is not encouraged;
- Never throw diapers down the toilet, as they can cause blockages and damage the sewer system;
- To reduce the environmental impact, you can use biodegradable or compostable bags to collect used diapers;
- It is essential to follow local waste disposal regulations, such as respecting collection times and only throwing away accepted types of waste;
- If possible, it's a good idea to recycle diaper materials, such as plastic and wood pulp, to reduce the environmental impact. However, not all recycling centers accept diapers and there may be restrictions based on geographic area;
- Consider trying washable diapers.
