Dove, one of the most popular soaps on the personal hygiene market, continues to spark controversy for its unscrupulous greenwashing policies. A documentary produced by the UK branch of Greenpeace, with a revealing title, Toxis influenceThe Dark Side of Dove, a brand owned by the Unilever Group, is heavily criticized. Dove spends millions of dollars every year on expensive advertising and marketing campaigns to present itself as a flagship product for the environment, sustainability, and women's natural beauty. But in reality, Dove soaps, which alone generate annual revenues of $331 million, are highly polluting: they spread the plastic we should eliminate or at least reduce. And Dove's parent company, Unilever, produces 1.700 plastic bags per second: a quantity so large that proper disposal is impossible.
Unilever had already been investigated in Great Britain by the Competition Authority for its greenwashing marketing and advertising campaigns for brands like Dove and Cif. Here too, Dove is presented as a green and environmentally friendly soap, but in reality, it is a powerful global distributor of non-recyclable plastic sachets.
