Washable diapers They are made with materials that can be washed (even in the washing machine) and dried several times, unlike the disposable diapers, which are thrown away after each change. Natural fibres are used, particularly suitable for baby's skin, such as organic cotton, hemp and Bamboo.
They can have various forms, but in general they have:
- Absorbent inner layer: often made of cotton, bamboo, microfiber or hemp, which holds urine and feces.
- Waterproof outer layer: usually in PUL (laminated polyurethane) or similar material, to prevent leaks.
- Adjustable closure: snaps, velcro or elastic, to adapt to children of different ages.
Cloth diapers are used exactly like disposable ones, and during the usage cycle they offer two enormous advantages.
The first is the economic savings: considering that a baby can use up to 5 diapers a day, the savings are around 1.500-2.000 euros. Then there's the environmental aspect. A disposable diaper takes about 500 years to decompose, and a child produces about 1 ton of disposable diapers in 2-3 years. A washable diaper lasts many years, if used well, even 10, as in the case of the model Prefold or pleated, with rectangles of absorbent fabric to be folded and fixed with a waterproof cover.
