On average, men need more calories compared to women for three main reasons related to physiology and body composition.
Muscle mass
Men generally have more muscle mass compared to women. Muscle consumes more energy even at rest than fat. This increases the basal metabolism, that is, the calories that the body burns even at rest, just to maintain vital functions (breathing, circulation, temperature, etc.).
The largest body
Men are on average:
- more highest
- more heavy
- to slightly larger organs
A larger body requires more energy to function, so your daily calorie needs increase.
Hormonal differences
Hormones influence body composition:
- il testosterone (higher in men) promotes muscle growth
- The estrogen (higher in women) favor a slightly higher body fat percentage
Because muscle uses more energy than fat, this contributes to men's higher calorie needs.
How many calories do you need?
From 19 to 64 years of age, the daily energy requirement is approximately 2.000 calories for women and 2.500 for men. These figures then tend to decrease after age 65. And in any case, it is a question of medium: Actual needs depend on individual age, height, weight, physical activity, and metabolism.
