Andropause, understood as the male equivalent of menopause, does not exist. In men, there is no sudden cessation of production of sexual hormones: testosterone tends to eventually decrease. gradually and in a very variable way with age. However, there is a real medical condition called hypogonadism maschile, in which testosterone is pathologically low and compatible symptoms appear. It can also affect older men, but it shouldn't automatically be attributed to simple aging.
In an oversimplification that creates confusion, it's called andropause, but in reality they are two very different things. Menopause is an inevitable process for women, with all the consequences that it entails. This also affects sexual function, as ovarian function ceases. Nothing of the sort occurs in men, who, from this point of view, do not experience andropause, as their testicles are capable of producing androgens and sperm throughout their lives. Men's fertility does not cease, even though sperm quality declines. Of course, this doesn't mean that nothing changes in a man's body and sexual activity as he ages. Andropause, and in this case the term becomes correct, is a gradual decline in testosterone, a hormone that affects libido and muscle strength, but also energy and even mood. After age 45-50, testosterone declines, and sperm production may also become less efficient, but it never disappears completely. writes Ilaria Messuti, endocrinologist at Humanitas Gradenigo, in a very useful book, The invisible balance (Garzanti editions) to shed light on this topic.
Rather, men should know that the decrease in testosterone can be accelerated by some factors, all linked to lifestyle:
- Smoke
- Obesity
- Too sedentary a life
- Alcohol abuse and drug use
- Stress
- Insomnia
- Malfunction of the endocrine glands
