Chip Tubes: Why They're Impossible to Recycle

The best-selling, and also the most feared, are Pringles. Currently, the only solution is to recycle them and not dispose of them.

creative recycling of potato chip tubes
Few containers create more problems for the disposal chain than potato chip tubes. The main reason isn't the pollution effect per se, but the fact that these containers combine multiple materials—cardboard, metal layer, internal laminate, metal or plastic base, and plastic cap—which can't be easily separated for recycling. Virtually no recycling facility is equipped for this recovery operation, and thus potato chip tubes are known as "the recycling nightmare."
The brand most contested by environmental associations for the compulsive use of crisp tubes is the Pringles group, but it is only the tip of the iceberg: many other brands such as Lay's (Pepsi Cola group),  Crick Crok  and Joker Snack they use these deadly containers, and no one, apart from generic commitments, seems willing to take a step back.

The reason is simple: non-recyclable containers guarantee lower costs and higher revenues. How? Through a series of advantages for companies.

More protected product, without leaks

In these tubular containers, the product, usually chips, is better protected, there are fewer losses during processing and therefore higher margins compared to the final price.

  • The rigid tube keeps the chips intact and stacked, preventing them from breaking during transport.
  • Unlike flexible bags, the container resists compression in supermarkets or warehouses.

Ease of storage

Logistics costs, from shipping to storage, are among those that have the greatest impact on the production costs of these products.
  • The form standard cylindrical allows pipes to be stacked more easily on pallets and shelves.
  • This reduces the damage during logistics and increases transportation efficiency.

Marketing

Finally, marketing also plays an important role in the creation of millions of "impossible to recycle" monsters.
  • The tube is iconic and instantly recognizable: anyone who sees a red cylinder immediately thinks of Pringles.
  • It allows for graphics continuous vertical, more visible than a flat bag.
  • Favors the brand loyalty, because the packaging itself becomes a symbol of the product.

Faced with pressure from environmental groups, Pringles has committed to making its potato chip tubes eco-friendly by 2028, but at the moment this is only a vague commitment and difficult to implement. Consumers have only one way to avoid the damage caused by these containers: recycle them, as we suggest. here with some simple, useful and easy-to-implement suggestions.
