The Walking School: a project in Livorno that teaches children about nature and culture.

At the Benci Institute, students study outdoors. An agreement involving the municipality, the Carabinieri, and local associations has been reached.

A school that, with its project, challenges the closures imposed by the coronavirus and proposes an educational path, entitled "the walking school”, which could become a format to be followed in many schools.

BENCI INSTITUTE

We are atBenci Institute, in the heart of the historic center of Livorno, where 400 children are enrolled (double if the entire school district is considered), 80 percent of whom are foreigners. An open school by definition, with extensive networks throughout the area where it is located and an excellent level of integration between Italian and foreign students. A school where nothing is wasted.

THE WALKING SCHOOL

The “Walking School” project the offer traveling lessons of children, within a single educational program. The school opens to the outside world and offers students the opportunity to explore evocative spaces for their education. There's not only a connection with nature, with walks in the woods and outdoors, but also visits to museums, artisan shops, to the places where the institutions are located.

THE PATHS OF THE WALKING SCHOOL

To implement the "Walking School" project, the Benci Institute has signed an agreement with the municipal administration, several local associations, the Carabinieri, the Community of Sant'Egidio, and the Mascagni Music Institute. Under this agreement, the children will: paths linked to legality, volunteering, to civic education, to the care of thetechnology and the correct use of roads and sidewalks.
