Massimo is a young adult with mild cognitive impairment who lives in Turin and attends a day center. For years, his days were fairly repetitive: educational activities, workshops, and few opportunities for real work. Since joining the "BiciclAbile" project through the "Animazione Valdocco" social cooperative, his life has changed, and his days have become incredibly busy, disassembling and reassembling bicycles in need of repair, assisted by a tutor or even an experienced volunteer.
“BiciclAbile” is a social project of the city of Turin, whose main goals are job inclusion and the reuse of abandoned bicycles.
Practically:
- they recover seized or abandoned bicycles in the Municipal Police depots
- they are brought to the workshop and repaired and reconditioned
- the work is also done by people with disabilities or in social reintegration processes
- with the support of volunteer technicians and craftsmen who teach mechanical skills
These bikes are then:
- donate to people in need
- given to voluntary associations
- sold to finance further activities
And always in Turin there are Lorenzo, Oleg and Francesco, the protagonists of the social cycle workshop Monsù Ciclet of Turin. Young people with disabilities, each with their own unique skills, have started a bicycle restoration and repair workshop, which has quickly become a hub for local enthusiasts. It's a place where bicycles are restored and made reusable, but it's also a space open to the community to foster a culture of social inclusion and the reuse economy. Partners include the municipal police force and the Turin Juvenile Court, which, through a collaborative effort, provide confiscated and unusable bicycles to Monsù Ciclet volunteers, giving them a new lease on life.
