The supermarket where only expired food is sold

Obviously edible and safe. In America, a food chain has emerged that relies on the fight against food waste.

Only in America could they think of creating a chain of stores, both in-person and online, to offer the sale, at rock-bottom prices, of expired food. Safe and perfectly edible, of course.

SUPERMARKET EXPIRED FOOD

The project was created by Doug Rauch, former president of the American food chain Trader Joe's and the shops on the network they take their name from the non-profit association that is leading the plan,  The Daily Table. Supplies come from other supermarkets, directly from companies, and other suppliers: they are inspected, labeled, and offered to the public at very low prices. First and foremost, to help families who can't afford "normal" prices and to reduce food waste. For now, The Daily Table It has three active stores between Boston and Cambridge, and a platform through which you can buy any product, from fruit to pasta, online.

FOOD WASTE IN AMERICA

According to data released by Rauch, every year in the United States, 40 percent of food is thrown away, a waste that, calculated in monetary terms, is equivalent to approximately $165 billion, or 120 billion euros. And while food is wasted, 15 percent of American families live in situations of food insecurity.

It is therefore to find a solution to these two problems that the entrepreneur decided to launch what undoubtedly remains a business strategy but which, at the same time, allows for the prevention of food waste.

EXPIRED FOOD AND FOOD WASTE

In fact, expired food does not always have to be thrown away: yogurt For example, it can be eaten even ten to fifteen days after its expiration date, at most it contains fewer lactic acid bacteria. Oil stays in good condition even six months after its expiration date, and the same goes for pasta. Eggs, however, may be an exception; it's best to consume them no later than a week after the expiration date indicated on the packaging.

But remember that the best way to avoid food waste is to not overdo it with the grocery and don't take advantage of current offers if we already know that that particular product will not be consumed and will end up directly in the garbage bin.
