The energy transition in Italy relies on southern wind. Ninety-four percent of Italy's wind power production is concentrated in the southern regions, with Puglia leading the way in terms of energy generated (6.392,50 GW/h), followed by Campania (4.076,10 GW/h) and Sicily (3.348,40 GW/h). These data underscore the strategic role of Southern Italy in the renewable energy sector, thanks to favorable climate conditions and incentive policies that have led to an increase in investments.
According to Wind Europe data, 2024 saw a 32% increase in installed wind power capacity, thanks to 685 new installations. This positive trend reflects not only greater environmental awareness but also institutional commitment to promoting renewables through streamlined bureaucracy and financial incentives.
As a result, an increasing number of Italians are considering the possibility of integrating wind energy into their homes: That Energy makes available on its website complete to understand the opportunities and advantages possible even in the domestic sphere.
Returning to the Italian scenario, the North and Central regions are struggling to keep pace, primarily due to more stringent landscape and urban planning constraints, as well as a lower propensity for investment in this sector. The geographical distribution of wind farms is uneven, with large areas of the country still under-exploited for renewable energy production.
At the European level, Italy ranks seventh in installed wind power capacity, with 12,9 GW, lagging behind leading sector powerhouses such as Germany (72,7 GW), the United Kingdom (31,6 GW), and Spain (31,2 GW). However, the outlook for the future is encouraging: according to Wind Europe forecasts, Italy could increase its wind power capacity by 64% by 2030, from 12.270 to 20.090 plants.
To achieve this ambitious goal, it will be necessary to accelerate the approval process for new plants and strengthen the electricity transmission grid, making the system more efficient and sustainable. With targeted investments and optimized management of available resources, Italy will be able to strengthen its role in the European energy landscape and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
