Sean Mayberry is a man who has spanned many lives, combining diplomacy and healthcare work in poor countries, but primarily focusing on treating depression in Africa, where the condition is underrecognized and untreated. To provide comprehensive and effective care to men and women suffering from depression in Africa, Mayberry created StrongMinds in 2013 , a global nonprofit organization committed to treating mental illnesses where no treatment is available.
StrongMinds specifically trains community members to lead group psychotherapy sessions for a period of at least six weeks. During these sessions, participants learn to understand the underlying factors of their fragility and how to address them to regain serenity.
The results of the StrongMinds project are extraordinary: since its inception, one million people have been treated with group psychotherapy , and 80 percent have recovered from depression. Many of them are now committed to providing psychological support to their communities. All at a minimal cost for the entire course of treatment: no more than $23 per patient . And Time magazine rightly included Mayberry among the hundred most influential people in the world in medicine and health.
