CHICKEN MASSACRE –
A massacre. Violent, submerged, and covered by a single objective: to eliminate the animals which are not useful to the production chain. CHICK FARMING –
The reason? They're not useful for selecting chickens. A kind of deliberate culling, which all animal welfare associations have protested.
Furthermore, the practice is carried out without waste from the farmers' point of view: the chicks, in fact, are ground up to make fish feed. Faced with a wave of protests, the Berlin government has finally decided to take action. Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has allocated €3 million to finance a project at Leipzig University. With this method, breeders, by inserting a needle into the egg, will be able to determine the sex beforehand and avoid the subsequent massacre.
Obviously, this solution doesn't convince farmers, who complain about the increased production costs. And for now, the government has decided to consider it "optional." A partial victory, then, for animal rights groups. Yet, it's a first step on the road to civilization.
