Speed cameras are a waste: over 7 are unauthorized.

And in this way the fines become uncollectable. Motorists can appeal and not pay them.

Appeal against speeding fines, compensation for motorists, and costs to municipal administrations
In Italy, even speed cameras, which are supposed to regulate drivers' speeds and improve road safety, are rigged, meaning they're illegal.
According to data that emerged after a census by the Ministry of Transport, in Italy there are approximately 11.000 devices (between fixed and mobile), but only about 3.600 were registered on the official platformThe others, that is, about 7.000, have not yet been entered into the system, and are therefore illegitimate.

A speeding ticket can be canceled If the device is not compliant, as clarified by several rulings of the Court of Cassation. The most significant cases of speed camera unlawfulness are:

  • lack of approval (not just technical “approval”)
  • lack of periodic calibration
  • failure to notify in advance (signs poorly visible or absent)
  • device usage outside the authorized conditions
