THE SKIN FISH PROJECT –

The Skin Fish Project is a project funded by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies as part of the "Initiatives to support fishing activities" (Ministerial Decree of 02/10/14). The aim of the project is to: to experiment and evaluate the use of waste from many fish productions, fish skin. In particular, The project identified the fish skins present on the Italian market that could have an application in alternative sectors such as clothing, footwear, objects, accessories and design in general.Experiences in some Northern European countries demonstrate that fish is not only a valuable food source, but can also provide the raw material for creating durable products, such as leather. The project has identified the main fish species most suitable for this use, defining the technical and organizational requirements for obtaining fish leather suitable for suitable tanning. An integral part of the Skin Fish project is identifying and encouraging various artisanal businesses to create original prototypes for potential commercial exploitation. The project's main objectives are:

  • Identification of the most suitable fish species
  • Definition of organizational and technical methods for the collection of waste/raw material (fish skin) and their storage
  • Samples of tanned fish skin
  • Creation of prototypes of various types and shapes
  • Search for companies potentially interested in commercial scale processing
  • Identifying the most suitable types of products for which fish skin can be used
  • Information/disclosure to sector stakeholders of the results obtained and any opportunities found

ACCESSORIES WITH FISH PRODUCTION WASTE –

The project's results certainly define a new diversification opportunity for the fishing industry, generating additional revenue by using what is currently an unused waste by-product and transforming it into a raw material with unique characteristics. The results obtained have allowed us to identify a new business area both in the fishing sector and in the food and beverage sector.handicraft and in the manufacturing sector, offering the opportunity to create new businesses and jobs. The increased awareness of what can be achieved with appropriately treated fish skin and the many applications it has created outline an interesting diversification opportunity. Following the project's conclusion, numerous manufacturing companies expressed genuine interest in developing business ideas around the new material, diversifying their product offerings on the market. A line of small costume jewelry made from Adriatic fish skin was launched.
