You know those wonderful ones Mexican hearts that seem to explode with color? It is about the Sacred Heart, an ancient devotional symbol that over time has crossed religious boundaries to enter the world of popular art and craftsmanship. In Mexico, many artisans handcraft splendid Sacred Hearts in different materials, each decorated with bright colors and unique details. They're so beautiful that we decided to offer our own version... using recycled cardboard!
Necessary
- A cardboard box
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Cutter
- Acrylic or tempera paints (red is essential)
- Round tip brushes
- Glass of water
- Hot glue
- Permanent markers or felt-tip pens for details
Method
- Open the cardboard box and draw the outline of a Sacred Heart with a pencil.
- Cut it out with scissors or a cutter.
- Now draw a second, smaller heart and cut it out. Make two identical ones.
- Glue the two small hearts on top of each other with hot glue, then glue them to the center of the large heart.
- Paint the central heart red. Decorate the rest of the heart with colors of your choice, preferably bright and shiny, as per Mexican tradition.
- Color the flame yellow, adding touches of red or orange if you like.
- Once dry, enrich everything with small decorative details: dots, stripes, diamonds or other patterns of your choice, using permanent markers or felt-tip pens.
- If you want to hang your Sacred Heart of Mexico, glue a hook on the back.
