Summer is one of the ideal times to cultivate the pleasure of reading. The important thing is not to waste it with the wrong reading position, otherwise even the most interesting or captivating book can become annoying, if not downright repulsive.
The best position for reading by the sea depends mainly on the sun, wind, and back comfort . In general:
- Semi-reclining with back raised (The most recommended position): Use a bed or rolled-up towel behind your upper back, with your knees slightly bent. This allows you to read for extended periods without straining your neck and lower back.
- In the shade or with an umbrellaDirect light on the page creates glare and forces you to squint; furthermore, prolonged exposure to the sun can be tiring.
- Book at chest height or slightly above: avoid keeping it too low, because bending your neck downward for a long time can cause cervical tension.
- Relax your legs and change sides every now and then: even a comfortable position becomes uncomfortable after 30–40 minutes.
- Sunglasses with lenses suitable for reading (if you use them): it's best to avoid lenses that are too dark as they make it difficult to distinguish the letters.
A very pleasant position is: back supported, legs extended, feet slightly raised, book tilted toward you, and shadow on your face . If you prefer to read on your stomach, hold the book elevated and take frequent breaks to avoid straining your neck and lower back.
If you read while sitting on a deckchair on the beach, the most comfortable and sustainable position is usually with the backrest inclined at about 45–60° . Avoid lying completely flat, as your neck tends to bend too much toward the book. If you're lying on a towel or in a hammock, it's a good idea to toss and turn several times, and don't forget to get up frequently to walk around. Breaks are also useful while reading, just as they are when working in front of a computer.
To read on a boat , the best position must take into account movement, wind, sun, and stability . Generally, the following works best:
- Sitting with your back supported (the most stable position): on a bench, seat or cushion, with the backrest slightly inclined.
- Feet well supported: they help you follow the movement of the boat without stiffening your legs and back.
- Book close to face and supported with both hands: avoid holding it too low, because your neck will tire as the boat moves.
- Elbows resting (on an edge, a pillow or your thighs): reduces tension in your shoulders and arms.
- Body facing the direction of navigation: often reduces the feeling of instability compared to standing on one side.
- In the shade and with the book protected from the wind: The sun's reflection on the water can make it difficult to read, and the wind can stress your eyes.
- If the sea is calm, a very pleasant position is semi-reclining on a cushion, with knees slightly bent and the book tilted towards the face.
Finally, to read on the rocks , it is better to adapt rather than trying to lie down completely, and in any case do it when the sea is warm, otherwise you only risk ruining the book with the first wave of the sea.
A good position is:
- Sitting with your back leaning against a sloping rock: is often the most convenient and safe.
- A folded towel under your back or pelvis: makes the surface less hard and corrects awkward corners.
- Legs slightly bent (or one leg straight and one bent): helps maintain balance.
- Book resting on raised hands or knees: avoid keeping your neck too bent.
- Body slightly turned towards the sea but not exposed to direct glare: light on water can strain your eyes.
- Position away from the wet edge: in addition to being safer, it avoids having to continually change trim due to spray or waves.
One of the most pleasant positions is: back against a rock, towel under you, knees bent, book tilted toward your face, and a little shadow on your face . It's similar to a natural recliner, but with the added bonus of the sound of the sea.
