The butterfly that lives the longest
The butterfly which, thanks to its DNA, has a longer life and the Vanessa antiopa which can live up to a year. These butterflies live in almost every country in the world, and are easily recognizable thanks to a unique color scheme: the body, along the entire wingspan of about 6 centimeters, is amaranth, surrounded by a yellow stripe. It loves boschi and the margins of rivers, and is very widespread in Europe.
The butterfly that lives the least
At the opposite extreme, compared to the long-lived Vanessa antiopa, there are butterflies like the Ephèmera, which lives a few hours, a day at most, and the colorful butterflies of Costa Rica that do not live more than two weeks.
Monarch butterflies
Another species of butterflies that live much longer than average is the Monarch. In this case, nature wanted to accommodate the growth and evolutionary rhythms of these butterflies that live between Canada, the United States and Mexico, and must do migratory journeys for thousands of kilometers.
The stages of a butterfly's life
A butterfly has four life stages. The first is the egg, which turns dark shortly before hatching: a butterfly lays, on average, about 200-250 eggs during its lifetime. Then, in the second stage, a caterpillar emerges and feeds on the same eggshell it is contained in. The third stage: the caterpillar transforms into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly, ready to take flight. Finally, to allow the now adult butterfly to fly, its wings must dry and warm, and the hemolymph must circulate through the veins to allow the entire structure to open.
