When is it best to rent an electric car on a long-term basis?

A practical way to own a car without management and maintenance hassles. And without the risk of depreciation.

Electric car prices are still unsustainable, too high, and the value of this technology is significantly declining the day after purchase. A good alternative is long-term leasing, which is especially worthwhile when, despite frequent use of the car (home-work and frequent urban use), there are no particular interests tied to ownership (typical of car enthusiasts).

The tax benefits of an electric car purchased with a long-term lease vary based on the user's characteristics:

Professional / sole proprietorship

In this case you can:

  • deduct 20% of the rent,
  • deduct 40% of the VAT,
  • all within certain annual tax limits.

Here the advantage increases considerably:

  • 70% deductibility,
  • VAT normally deductible at 40%,
  • possibility of reaching 100% in some specific cases.

Sales agents

The most popular ones are:

  • deductibility up to 80%,
  • VAT is often fully deductible based on actual use.
Then there are a series of Other advantages:
  • The fee usually includes insurance, maintenance, road tax, and assistance. At this point, the worries, and often even the problems, related to car ownership disappear.
  • Basically, you pay a monthly rental fee and there are no unexpected costs.
  • The contract almost always has a mileage limit. Just stick to it, and it also offers fuel savings: generally speaking, long-term rental is convenient for up to 25.000 kilometers of annual use.
  • Long-term rental is particularly suitable for those who want to always have new cars (changing them every 2-4 years), with recent models, without having to worry about selling the previous one.
  • Electric cars are constantly evolving and therefore depreciate very quickly: long-term rental avoids this risk.
  • Long-term rental is convenient for those who have a VAT number, as it allows you to deduct the relevant amount and the costs of the car.
  • Here, the economic advantage increases significantly. Recharging at home can cost less than half as much as traditional fuel.
  • If you have a wallbox or a photovoltaic system, using a rental electric car is particularly convenient, as charging times are even lower than normal.

Enel's proposal

To make it even easier to get started with electric mobility, the Group led by Flavio Cattaneo has launched Enel Drive, an all-inclusive offering that includes long-term electric car rental in partnership with Arval, as well as electricity plans designed for those who charge their car at home. Specifically, those who choose the Enel Drive Flex Luce plan will receive a free loan of the Waybox home charging station. In several Italian cities, following initial pilots in Florence and Rome, it will be possible to drive one of the available models: the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and A6 e-tron Avant. Furthermore, those who participate in the test drive will receive two free monthly payments if they choose long-term rental with Enel Drive.
