2021 Non-Waste Award: All the Winners

Stories of sustainable development, of a different economy, of new growth models, between innovation, knowledge, and responsibility. The winners of the Don't Waste Award, which in 2021 reaches its 12th edition dedicated to water, always in the spirit of dialogue and exchange between businesses, associations, and civil society. The initiative, born from an idea by Antonio Galdo – director of www.nonsprecare.it – and promoted by Luiss Guido Carli University, can once again count on numerous scientific, institutional, and editorial partnerships.

"We're very pleased with how the most important part of our project is growing: school participation. Despite the current challenges, student participation from all over Italy continues to increase. This year alone, we've had more than thirty schools participate in the Non-Spread Award, which isn't just a ceremony but lasts seven months before the winners are announced. Over time, the Award has become an exemplary opportunity for representatives from the worlds of business, science, research, education, and associations to meet and discuss sustainability issues. This year, it aims to highlight the issue of water as a precious resource. The initiative has the stated goal of gathering and promoting best practices against waste. This year, the Award once again attracted ideas and projects from citizens and associations that can have a positive impact on the lives of communities and their residents, anticipating and interpreting the complexities of the present.

THE WINNERS OF THE 2021 DON'T WASTE AWARD

For this edition, there were 6 categories of the Award: Character, Schools, Companies, Associations, Startup, the InstitutionsThe awards ceremony, scheduled for Friday 26 November starting at 9,00 am, will be broadcast live on Luiss Social TV and on the Facebook page Don't Waste.

For the category Character is rewarded Daniele Cassioli, the greatest Paralympic skier of all time, blind since birth, who won 25 world water skiing titles. A graduate in physiotherapy, he created an association, Real eyes sport, which helps blind children approach sports.
He wrote a book, The wind against, to tell his story.

The prize Schools goes to the“GBB Lucarelli” Industrial Technical Institute of Benevento, where the professor teaches computer science Charles Mazzone, entered the list of the ten finalists of the Global Teacher Prize, the most important recognition in the world (under the aegis of UNESCO) for teachers. Mazzone is also involved in activities to combat school dropout in the South. And in its school, through the project The school outside, a true incubator of innovative startups has been born, allowing young people to create businesses, in synergy with universities, research centers, associations, and private investors.

The prize Companies is instead awarded to Ceramics Us and President Marco Bozzi, with a unique history, which began when the owner wanted to move the Città di Castello factory to Armenia to reduce labor costs. And they, the employees, stepped forward, formed a cooperative, officially becoming the company's owners, risking their severance pay and unemployment benefits. Now Ceramics Us is on the market with its innovative products, including an antibacterial ceramic for dishes, capable of repelling 99 % of bacteria.

Street lawyer wins the Non Sprecare Award for the Associations, a network now widespread throughout Italy that provides free legal assistance to people who cannot afford the costs of a lawyer. This is especially true for immigrants, who are exploited or forced to work in completely illegal conditions. Street lawyer, with his 56 locations, can assist almost 4.000 people per year.

For the category Startup, the jury awards Too good to go, a simple but very effective app thanks to which the consumer can purchase, at the end of the day, unsold products with a discount of up to 50 %A platform that has been joined in Italy 13mila shops with 4 millions of users. Too good to go It helps reduce two types of waste: unsold and/or expired food, which usually ends up in the trash. And the cost of disposing of this type of waste.

Finally, for the category the Institutions the jury selected the Municipality of Civitavecchia with the project Solidarity gardens, a virtuous triangular collaboration between the Municipality, the community of S. Egidio , local health authority 4 of the Municipality of Rome (Department of Mental Health) to help people affected by mental illness return to a normal life. The project consists of two phases: in the first, people were trained to understand the plants and cultivation techniques; in the second, the Solidarity gardens become a reality.
