This year's edition, in particular, will touch on the theme of the enormous waste of medicines in Italy300 million citizens consume more than 10 medicines a day, many of which are without a prescription, even when necessary. 40 percent of the medicines we keep in our homes have exceeded their shelf life. The cost of this waste is estimated at around 100 euros per family, and weighs heavily on the accounts of the National Health Service. The situation is even more serious regarding the waste of antibioticsItalians consume 43,9 percent more antibiotics than the average for all European Union countries. "These figures are even more scandalous in a country like Italy, where 12 million citizens forgo treatment because they can't afford it, and the average waiting time for a mammogram in a hospital is 122 days," comments Antonio Galdo. He adds: "Only by eliminating certain wastes, such as drug waste, will it be possible to free up resources for a more efficient National Health Service, one that can be used by all Italians."
