The pet therapy project , implemented by the Don Bosco Foundation in collaboration with the Do Re Miao Association, in the penitentiaries of Pisa, Livorno, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano, and Gorgona Isola, offers inmates the opportunity to maintain a strong bond with their family dogs. This helps rebuild a relationship for both parties while awaiting release.
PET THERAPY IN PISA PRISON
Training and caring for dogs in the Pisa prison offers inmates a concrete opportunity for redemption and reintegration into society. Trained dogs can be used as assistance dogs for people with disabilities, as well as bulletproof dogs for law enforcement. The project has a positive impact on the lives of the inmates involved, as well as on the lives of the trained dogs. Through training, the dogs become more sociable and learn to perform tasks useful to society. For the inmates, the benefits are numerous. The dogs improve their mood during such a challenging time in their lives, and the relationship with all prison staff (officers, educators, psychologists) is significantly improved. Thanks to the bond with the dogs, inmates and detainees demonstrate greater personal care and are recognized for respecting the rules, from punctuality to attendance for dog care.

DO RE MIAO ASSOCIATION
The arrival of dogs is always a treat for inmates. The two hours a week that inmates are allowed to spend with their dogs pass very quickly. The dogs currently involved are owned by Barbara Bellettini, president of the Do Re Miao association: from Nino, a nine-year-old male mixed-breed dog adopted from the Tom shelter in Pisa, to Nana, a border collie from a breeder, and Pigna, a two-year-old female mixed-breed dog adopted from the Tom shelter in Pisa. Do Re Miao's work in prisons over the years has led to the publication of three books: Cani Dentro (Haqihana Editions), Ore d'Aria (Erisson Editions), and Gorgona, l'isola felice (Erisson Editions).
