Il pets bonus, primarily for dogs and cats you keep at home and care for, consists of a tax deduction on your personal income tax (IRPEF) for veterinary expenses, specialist visits, surgical procedures, laboratory tests, and medications. The maximum expense is €550, and the benefit is very simple: it can be included directly on your tax return, without any bureaucratic steps, but with the relevant documentation.
The requirements to access the pet bonus are as follows:
- Being a resident in Italy and be at least 65 years old.
- Have an ISEE not exceeding 16.215 euros.
- Owning a pet duly registered.
- The bonus is valid for dogs, cats, ferrets and small rodents regularly registered in the Pet Registry.
- The expenses incurred must have a regular prescription.
- Payments must be made through traceable methods (bank transfer, bank check, debit or credit card) and receipts or invoices must be kept that show the owner's tax code.
Finally, in addition to the national bonus, pet owners can access benefits provided at the local level, specifically by regional and municipal governments. It's important to find out if and how this is available in your area.
