Many residents (and tourists too) in Beijing choose to go out cycling in the evening to enjoy the cooler weather, the illuminated views of the city, and a more peaceful journey after the daytime traffic. On roads like Chang'an Avenue (the main artery that crosses the city from east to west) the evening cycling population has increased significantly in recent years, with routes very popular after sunset. Some itineraries and clubs organize dedicated night tours, and even local tourist offices promote cycle and pedestrian paths evenings to help you appreciate the city in a different light.
Beijing's nightlife scene is diverse. First and foremost, there are white-collar workers, stressed by a 12-hour workday, who don't want to be stuck in traffic or wait for the subway. They relax by riding their bikes. Then there are the students, especially university students, who they regularly participate in the evening bike rides, starting from the central areas or from the university areas. And it is not uncommon to meet elderly people who use cycle paths or greenways for exercise or walking.
