To make a pair of Thai pants (the classic loose-fitting pants, often called fisherman pants) even using fabric scraps, because the pattern is very simple and modular. The idea is to assemble rectangles instead of complex cuts. The pieces don't have to be identical: the Thai patchwork pants come out perfectly.
This style of trousers offers several practical advantages, especially compared to structured Western trousers. They were originally designed for work and warm weather, so they prioritize comfort and freedom of movement.
-
- They are very wide and do not constrict.
- They easily adapt to different bodies without precise sizes.
- The wrap-around waist allows for adjustments throughout the day.
Furthermore, the low, wide crotch allows for easy squatting, sitting, and movement without stressing the seams. Finally, they allow for air circulation and retain less heat, keeping you cool even in hot weather.
And all this makes Thai pants useful for:- during pregnancy
- after meals
- for yoga, meditation and relaxation
But let's see how they are made with a simple DIY technique.
Necessary
- 100 cm of fabric 140 cm high
- 1 cotton/silk ribbon (ribbon)
Method
- Take the 140cm x 100cm fabric. Fold it in half, right sides together, selvedge to selvedge.
- Measure half of 70 centimeters and go down 40 centimeters. This will find point A.
- Cut from the bottom, straight across to point A.
- Cut double the fabric
- Sew the inside leg side together with a straight stitch and finish with a zigzag.
- Finish all sides of the trousers, the sides, the bottom and the waist and apply your ribbon to the ends of the waistband on both the front and back.
- Position the stitching where you want the buttons, make a buttonhole at the bottom of the trousers, doubling the fabric. Sew the buttons only on the front of the trousers.
