Floating photovoltaics , also called floating solar , basically works like a traditional photovoltaic system, with the difference that the solar panels are installed on floating structures above bodies of water, such as artificial lakes, reservoirs or dams.

1. Structure and support

How are floating solar panels mounted?
  • The solar panels are mounted on floats made of lightweight, water-resistant materials (typically high-density plastic or treated metal).
  • These floats form some tunnels or modular platforms, which can be connected to each other to cover large areas of water.
  • The structure keeps the panels at a slight inclination, optimizing sun exposure.

2. Power generation

And how do they generate electricity?
  • Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electricity, similar to ground-mounted systems.
  • The energy produced passes through power inverter , which transform direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) that can be used by the electrical grid.
  • Electric cables are brought to the ground via special submerged or piled lines.

3. Specific advantages

 The most interesting aspect of floating solar panels, in terms of savings, is that this technology avoids the use of land intended for agriculture and grazing, and therefore does not damage primary economic activities.
  1. Greater efficiency
    The water under the panels helps to cool them down, reducing efficiency loss due to heat, a common problem in traditional panels.
  2. Less land use
    It does not occupy agricultural land or urbanized areas, exploiting unused water surfaces.
  3. Evaporation reduction
    By covering water bodies, the panels reduce evaporation, which is especially useful in arid regions.
  4. Low environmental impact
    Although it requires careful analysis, floating photovoltaics often have a smaller impact than large land-based systems.

Floating solar panels have some disadvantages, such as these:
  • Corrosion and maintenance: Water can accelerate the degradation of materials, so resistant panels and structures are needed.
  • More complex installation: the structure must be well anchored to resist wind and waves.
  • Impact on the aquatic ecosystem: water coverage for flora and fauna must be evaluated.

It is the country with the largest installed capacity of floating photovoltaics in the world and hosts some of the largest projects (in the past it had the largest plant in the world on freshwater), and also holds the record for the total number of FPV plants installed.

India

It is growing rapidly and is among the countries with the largest installed capacity and expansion plans in the coming years.

Indonesia

  • Expected as one of the main future markets for floating solar thanks to vast water resources and strong energy demand.

South Korea

  • Although not at the level of China or India, it has big plans such as that of Saemangeum, which aims to become one of the largest in the world (over 2 GW) in the coming years.

Japan

  • One of the first countries to adopt this technology since the 2010s, with significant installations on dams and reservoirs.

Singapore

  • Despite its small size, it has significant installations, including a large floating photovoltaic system associated with water services.

Netherlands

  • The Netherlands is also a pioneer in floating solar in Europe, with numerous projects on reservoirs and lakes.
