Paddle yoga: instead of a mat, there's a sup board

Paddle yoga is a different way to practice yoga in the midst of nature: in the sea, on a board. Let's take a closer look at how it's done and what you need.

PADDLE YOGA

Paddle yoga offers the sensation of practicing yoga in the middle of the sea, freeing you from stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts. The SUP board serves as the traditional mat used for this discipline. Benefits include profound relaxation, direct contact with the sea water while meditating, improved concentration, and an overall sense of well-being.

HOW TO DO PADDLE YOGA

To practice paddle yoga effectively, a few things are necessary. Make sure you have enough space on the SUP board (which replaces a mat) to move your legs with ease. Choose a location sheltered from wind and waves. Avoid jerky movements while paddling. Drink plenty of water before heading out to sea. Wear appropriate clothing for this activity.
We talked about it with Claudia Porta creator of the app 10minyoga and yoga and paddle yoga teacher.

WHAT IS PADDLE YOGA?

We asked Claudia about her passion for this discipline, and here's what she told us: "Paddle yoga is a way to practice yoga where it belongs: in the midst of nature. Yoga purists may frown upon it, but I find it a delightful interlude during the summer, when the intense heat can prevent you from getting the full benefit of traditional practice.

Practicing on a board, in unstable balance, forces us to question ourselves further: even the positions that seem simple to us or that we have learned to practice with confidence, must be approached again with the spirit (and with the humility) of the beginner.

Physically, muscles are put under increased strain, and balance is further challenged. Any small flaw in the execution of an asana will immediately be highlighted on the table, which is unforgiving of unforeseen asymmetries.

On a mental level, however, finding yourself in the middle of the sea (or lake, or river) far away from everything and everyone is extremely relaxingYour breathing naturally tunes in to the rhythm of the waves, and you feel at one with nature. You experience firsthand the principle of interdependence that underlies yoga teachings.”

WHY PRACTICE PADDLE YOGA

"But beyond all the serious explanations," Claudia continues, "paddle yoga is fun, and practicing it with friends is even more so. If you're on vacation, it's definitely a wonderful way to relax and stay fit while enjoying the sun and sea, and getting an enviable tan. Important: Don't forget your waterproof sunscreen and sunglasses.”
