A wave of stories, images, and emotions sweeping across Italy to remind us how much the sea belongs to us. The Italian Ocean Film Festival (held annually in October) isn't just a film festival, but a true journey into the heart of a great natural heritage, one we often waste, even with trivial things, such as too much waste scattered in the sea and on the beaches.
Born as the Italian version of the Ocean Film Festival World Tour, an international project created in Australia and now spread to over fourteen countries, the festival brings to the big screen every year a selection of the best films dedicated to the sea, the oceans and those who live and protect them. The Italian edition is curated by ITACAThe Outdoor Community, company specialized in the promotion of film festivals linked to the environment and outdoor culture, already known for bringing the Banff Mountain Film Festival e Reel rock.
The idea is simple yet powerful: using the universal language of cinema to inspire, educate, and unite. Each film tells a story of a fragment of the ocean—stories of explorers, marine biologists, surfers, artists, and coastal communities. which become metaphors of courage, discovery and respect for natureThrough the beauty of the images and the strength of the testimonies, the Festival invites the public to reflect on the profound bond between man and the sea and on the need to protect it.
But the project doesn't stop at the screening. Through meetings with experts, athletes, biologists, and communicators, the festival conveys a clear message: every gesture counts, and protecting the oceans is a collective responsibility. Because, even if we don't all live near the sea, the sea lives within each of us.
With his motto “Inspire and Share”, the Ocean Film Festival Italia invites us to look at the sea with new eyes—not just as a place of adventure or vacation, but as a compass to orient our future.
Among the characters that are described, there are those who cross the abysses, those who tell the life of the whale, those who denounce pollution or those who simply show the magic of moving on water. The result is a mosaic of voices and perspectives that, together, celebrate the culture of the sea as a space of adventure and awareness. A space we have the duty and right not to waste, inch by inch.
