Freedhome: The Prison-Made Goods Shop

A shop selling products made by those seeking a second chance. This is " Freedhome ," an exhibition space in the center of Turin, at Via Milano 2/C, where you can purchase items made by companies active throughout Italy in the prison sector.

FREEDHOME SHOP PRODUCTS MADE IN PRISON

Thus, among the shelves, you can find "Brutti e Buoni" (Ugly and Good) products from the Brissogne inmates, sweets from the "Banda Biscotti" (Band Biscuit Band) from the Verbania prison, and even cosmetics from the Giudecca area of ​​Venice. The initiative, supported by the City of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo, was made possible by the work of a group of inmates who oversaw the restoration. The goal of the shop, the organizers stated, is to raise awareness for certain social initiatives, but above all, to support job creation with a view to the social rehabilitation of inmates.

FREEDOME TURIN

The prison economy in Italy boasts a turnover of around 5-6 million euros and employs around a thousand inmates . This economic and social reality, however, requires places like Freedhome to grow in visibility and, above all, to gain market access . Prison work , in fact, allows inmates a growth path towards rehabilitation, which, to be complete, can only involve learning a job they can perform once they are reintroduced into society . There are many virtuous examples on the shelves of the Turin store, ranging from t-shirts from the Turin prison (Extraliberi) and the Genoa Marassi prison, to coffee , herbal teas, and tea made by inmates in Pozzuoli (Caffè Lazzarelle, the name of the work cooperative created in the Naples prison). Furthermore, a trial period will soon begin that will allow a former inmate to work in the Turin store.
