How to remove humidity from your home with salt
Did you know that coarse salt can absorb humidity? Use it to make a DIY dehumidifier. Place a colander over a pot, cover it with a kitchen towel, and then pour 100-150 grams of coarse salt on top. Alternatively, purchase a salt lamp that absorbs humidity: you can find them in furniture stores, natural products stores, and online. This is an economical solution: lamps range in price from €20 to €60 depending on their size, and they'll also enhance your home.
How do you recognize a damp house?
To recognize a house, or a single room, affected by humidity, there are some unmistakable signs. The first is the pungent smell of mold, or something very similar: unmistakable. It's also easy to notice traces of humidity and water stains on the walls, especially in the upper areas. If the house has parquet floors, they may creak. Meanwhile, window panes in humid homes are prone to condensation. Finally: You may have some allergy problems or breathing difficulties. This means the air in your home has an unacceptable level of humidity.
How to reduce humidity with a dehumidifier
If it becomes absolutely necessary, you can reduce humidity with a dehumidifier. Obviously, choose a product made in Europe or America, not China, have it installed in the room most exposed to humidity, and monitor the device's built-in gauge. Generally, the humidity level in the home should be between 35 and 55 percent. An important tip to avoid waste: the dehumidifier should be left running until the room is dry. Then, turn it off. Turn it back on when the humidity level exceeds 60 percent. In any case, the humidity level in the home varies depending on the area. In the living area, the humidity level can be around 35%, while the temperature should be between 20°C and 22°C. In the sleeping area, however, the humidity level can fluctuate between 40% and 60%. The temperature, however, in the room intended for rest should never be below 15°C or above 18°C. The kitchen and the bathroom, on the other hand, are the rooms of the house where humidity tends to concentrate most, since hot water and cooking generate significant amounts of water vapor. In these areas, it's important to never exceed the 50%-60% range, with a temperature of 18°C-19°C for the kitchen and 22°C-24°C for the bathroom.
