How to remove limescale with natural remedies

Three ingredients are very effective: white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.

natural remedies for limescale

Limescale (calcium carbonate deposits) forms primarily with hard water and accumulates on faucets, showers, kettles, washing machines, and appliances. The most effective "natural" remedies are acidic ones, which chemically dissolve limescale. Many commercial limescale removers are available, but, aside from their cost, they have some drawbacks: they can damage delicate surfaces (such as lightweight steel or natural stone); they contain polluting surfactants and additives; and they can emit vapors that irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. In contrast, the most effective natural limescale removers (white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon) have none of these drawbacks.

How limestone is formed

Limescale is the direct consequence of hard water, which contains high concentrations of calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) salts.

The mechanism by which limestone is formed involves these steps:

  1. Water absorbs calcium and magnesium as it passes through rocks and soil (especially limestone).
  2. These salts remain dissolved in the water
  3. When the water comes heated or evaporates (kettles, showers, washing machines):
    • bicarbonates are transformed
    • calcium carbonate becomes insoluble
  4. The result is a white/greyish solid deposit: limestone
Why does limescale form more easily with heat? When you heat water, the solubility of bicarbonates decreases and carbon dioxide increases, causing calcium to precipitate as a solid. This is why limescale forms more easily in places where hot water flows, from faucets to kettles.

How to slow down limescale formation

Due to its nature, hard water makes it virtually impossible to prevent limescale buildup. There are a few things you can do to slow down and reduce it:
  • Dry surfaces after use: after showering or using hot water in a sink, simply wipe with a cloth or squeegee. The less hot water evaporates, the less limescale builds up.
  • Install a water softener or a limescale filter: they act on the hardness of the water and therefore reduce the formation of limescale.
  • There are also anti-limescale shower heads and faucets. The only downside is the price.
  • Every two weeks, do a light cleansing with one of the natural remedies we suggest.

Most effective natural limescale remedies

The three most effective natural limescale removers are: white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.
  • White vinegar

This is certainly the most effective and widely used natural remedy against limescale, also perfect for cleaning the most delicate materials such as the hob or the shelves of the kitchen. refrigeratorWhite vinegar can thoroughly remove limescale from surfaces and make them shine. To use, simply pour it into a bowl of water and scrub with a soft sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse with warm water.

It's also excellent for cleaning faucets: if filters, grilles, and shower heads are particularly damaged by limescale, simply unscrew them and leave them to soak in a solution of water and vinegar overnight to restore their shine.

And vinegar is also perfect for cleaning and disinfecting coffee makers, iron and washing machine. In the latter case, pour a liter of vinegar diluted with water into the empty washing machine drum and run the wash cycle at a temperature of about 60-70 degrees. Repeat this process at least once a month.

  • Baking soda

Baking soda is also very effective for removing limescale. It's especially recommended for cleaning the toilet: apply it to the inside walls in the evening and let it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub thoroughly with a toilet brush, flush a couple of times, and you'll have removed the limescale.

To make your sink shine, scrub it with half a lemon and baking soda. To remove limescale from your shower stall, combine baking soda and white vinegar, rub the mixture over the surfaces with a sponge, then let it sit for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly.

  • Citric acid
Once dissolved in water, this product must be applied to the various surfaces with a sponge and left to act for a few minutes. However, avoid using it on delicate surfaces such as marble and wood.

Recipe for a multipurpose natural limescale remover

This simple recipe allows you to prepare your own natural limescale remover at home and use it wherever you need it.

Ingredients

  • 250 ml of white vinegar
  • 250 ml of hot water
  • 2 spoons of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp sodium bicarbonate (to be used separately or at the end)

Preparation and use

  1. Pour into a spray bottle:
    • white vinegar + hot water
  2. Add the lemon juice and mix gently.
  3. Be careful not to put the bicarbonate directly into the bottle, but use it only when cleaning, separately from the white vinegar and lemon mixture.
  4. Spray the mixture on taps, shower and tiles and leave it to act for at least 10-20 minutes.
  5. After applying the acid, rinse and rub the bicarbonate of soda on a damp sponge: it will have an abrasive action that will remove limescale residue.
  6. Rinse everything with clean water and dry.
Always remember that this preparation should not be used on marble, natural stone, or very delicate surfaces.
