Muskin, the vegetable leather obtained from mushrooms

From the waste products of the earth, we obtain an excellent alternative to natural leather: a non-toxic vegetable-tanned leather that resembles suede.

Grado Zero Espace is a company in Montelupo Fiorentino, in the province of Florence, founded to develop innovative materials and technologies for manufacturing applications, including a particular type of leather, very soft and resistant, obtained from mushroom waste, called muskin.
Bags, hats, watchbands, shoes. It's not essential to have animal-based leather, with all the resulting consequences (including pollution from its processing), to make these products. This is demonstrated by the case of muskin, Suede leather derived from mushrooms and entirely plant-based. It has created a breathable, water-repellent, and non-toxic leather. Eco-friendly leather is an excellent alternative to animal-based leather, not only from an ethical but also an environmental perspective: the products require no chemical additives for treatment.
The muskin obtained from the mushroom Phellinus ellipsoideus, and in particular from the top of the mushroom, that is, from the cap. Phellinus ellipsoideus It's a large parasitic fungus that grows on trees in subtropical areas. It feeds on the wood and can cause white rot. This raw material is then processed to produce a surface that closely resembles suede.

According to Grado Zero documentation, muskin is a vegetable leather:

  • animal-free;
  • oil-free, therefore not based on fossil raw materials;
  • soft and with a suede-like appearance;
  • breathable;
  • capable of absorbing and subsequently releasing moisture;
  • naturally water repellent;
  • free, in the process declared by the company, of toxic chemicals.

Grado Zero Espace was founded in the early 2000s, based in Montelupo Fiorentino, in the heart of Tuscany's manufacturing system between the Prato textile district and the Santa Croce tanning district. The founders, Giada Dammacco and Filippo Pagliai, had a rather unique vision: not simply to create a new clothing brand, but to act as a bridge between scientific research, materials, and industry.

In 2021, Grado Zero Espace was acquired by Pangaia , an international company founded in 2019, which presents itself as a materials science company applied to lifestyle and fashion. Its underlying idea is to develop and market alternative materials—bio-based (in 2025, it presented its padding derived from wildflowers), recycled, regenerative, or obtained from natural resources—through everyday products.
