MUSIC WITH RECYCLED INSTRUMENTS

Brooms that become flutes, old wooden boxes that transform into guitars. Guido Antoniotti , a sixty-five-year-old former photographer, makes musical instruments from discarded items. His is a true magic, creating splendid harmonies thanks to his ingenuity and enviable skill. And to think that music only recently entered his life.

GUIDO ANTONIOTTI

"At school," he said in a recent interview with Corriere Sociale, "the subject I hated most was music, then a relative brought me a flute from Persia. I haven't stopped since." Guido has opened a shop in Candelo, in the province of Biella, where he welcomes guests by playing the instruments he has just finished making. So you can catch him blowing into flutes made from irrigation pipes, or plucking the strings of a guitar made from an old tennis racket . Inside his shop are dozens of instruments from all over the world, which Guido plays despite not being able to read a single note. His passion for music, in fact, exploded suddenly, fostered by an extraordinary ear that allowed him to gradually improve as a self-taught musician.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIAL

The idea of ​​combining music with recycling , he admits, comes from some instruments his friends brought him from Africa. These instruments, in fact, in the vast majority of cases are made from objects originally intended for another purpose that, in poor societies like those in Africa, were reused to make guitars, flutes, or drums. This was an idea that Guido couldn't let go, so he began collecting everything that had "musical" potential and began experimenting. The results , over the years, became increasingly admirable, so much so that Guido began using his instruments in public and joining some bands, such as Quinta Rua . Proof that, with a little ingenuity, even the most unthinkable object can give life to great melodies.
